Checkmate is a well known 50ft racing yacht available in Sydney!
Checkmate is a 50 foot Doug Peterson design (Design #61, with input from Bill Tripp and Bill Hardin) built in the USA, she was launched in April 1978. She was notable for her varnished topsides that showed off a Meranti veneer over her Cedar plank construction (and her glossy finish remains to this day). Checkmate was built to race, but also has an interior which is comfortable and functional. She was quite unique as she was built lighter and featured wider stern sections than other Peterson designs of the time. She sails particulary well in the light air downwind and featured in results for the West Coast races to Mexico. She maintains an IOR rating of 42.6ft IOR.
